Biography and Education

Dr. Sandy-Ann M. Griffith is an Assistant Professor of Counseling. She received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Old Dominion University (ODU) and her M.A. in Counselor Education with an emphasis in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, and play therapy from the University of Central Florida(UCF). Dr. Griffith worked on two federally funded multi-million-dollar research grants at the UCF’s Marriage and Family Research Institute and is currently a Research Fellow of The Consortium for Family Strengthening Research, an interdisciplinary, multi-university research team.

Dr. Griffith is committed to being an anti-racist educator and scholar who implements anti-racist and feminist pedagogies into her teaching, research, service, and leadership practices.

Some practices specific to teaching include:

  1. Engage in equitable, culturally relevant, and historically responsive teaching;
  2. Foster an inclusive learning environment;
  3. Develop students’ sociocultural awareness, and encourage self-reflection, collaboration, exploration, and critical thinking; and
  4. Decolonize syllabi, diversify course content/curriculum, assignments/assessment of learning, and create learning objectives and student learning outcomes that align with diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist standards

Clinical Interests

Dr. Griffith’s research interests include:

1) the impact of childhood adversity on family stability and adult relationship health outcomes in historically marginalized and systemically under-served populations and, 2) the efficacy of healthy fatherhood and relationship education programming in reducing recidivism rates and increasing family stability among Black/African American fathers. To date, Dr. Griffith has 11 refereed journal articles, 26 refereed presentations at the international, national, and/or regional level, and has independently conducted 12 non-refereed presentations and workshops. Dr. Griffith is also a lead facilitator of couple and relationship education (CRE) curricula, including the Becoming Parents Program (BPP) and the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP). She has taught undergraduate Human Services courses, masters level counseling courses, and doctoral level courses in counseling and counselor education and supervision. Her clinical experiences include individual, couples, trauma (including medical trauma), and group counseling for male perpetrators of domestic violence and substance abuse.
