Professional Organizations

student presenting research

In addition to Program requirements, students are encouraged begin their professional careers by joining professional organizations and participating in local, regional and national meetings.

American Mental Health Counselors Association

The American Mental Health Counselors Association serves the needs of mental health counselors and plays a significant role in any legislation affecting provider recognition in the mental health field.  For example, AMHCA‘s influence helped Licensed Professional Counselors become eligible as Army Substance Abuse Practitioners.  AMHCA has a superb annual conference where members  network along with expanding their professional knowledge.  Locally, MAMHCA offers:

  • a yearly job fair
  • license preparation
  • supervision workshops

American Counseling Association

The American Counseling Association is another organization that students join.  Their mission is to build a more diverse and inclusive counseling community.  They have an extensive job listing and provide many opportunities for students to make presentations or provide poster sessions at regional or national meetings.

American Association of State Counseling Boards

The program and its faculty are active members of AASCB (American Association of State Counseling Boards).  This provides the faculty the opportunity to interact with those Board members who license our graduates. Any issues or potential problems can be discussed and often resolved.  This Board is trying to address the very difficult challenges of license reciprocity.
