GMS and C3 Are Proud to Celebrate National Coming Out Day
Tuesday, Oct. 11 marked National Coming Out Day, an annual celebration of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. To mark the occasion, Graduate Medical Sciences and the Community Catalyst Center hosted a National Coming Out Day Celebration event in the C3 Suite. The two-hour event brought students from across GMS together to pick up a pride cupcake, a pin and resources on LGBTQIA+ resources on and off campus. Students could also meet peer mentors from gPLUS, a C3 affinity group which seeks to promote a deeper sense of belonging and celebrate the multiple identities among LGBTQIA+ students across the GMS programs. Jean-Pierre Roussarie, PhD, is an assistant professor of anatomy & neurobiology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. His lab studies the molecular events leading to neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Roussarie is also a Community Catalyst Center mentor for the gGLOBAL and gPLUS affinity groups. The library consists of 3 floors with over 500 study seats in the L-Instructional Building. Each floor has different noise allowances to provide for group collaboration, quiet study and silent study. Oral Health Science Faculty Works to Eliminate Dental Disparities in Latinx Community
Raul Garcia, professor at Goldman School of Dental Medicine and faculty in the GMS Oral Health Sciences program, is working hard to increase access to quality dental care within underserved communities. His work was recently featured in a BU Today article highlighting seven Latinx researchers making a difference with their scholarship and science. Garcia discussed his identity and experience as a Latino living in the United States, which, according to the article, has had a "fundamental impact on his research into the nature of oral health disparities -- and on identifying ways to eliminate them." C3 Gear-Up Week Builds Community with Five Different Events
To mark the first full week of classes, the GMS Community Catalyst Center (C3) hosted "Gear-Up Week" from September 12 to 16. With five different events throughout the week, students had the chance to build their community, enjoy some sweet treats and swag and learn the best ways to succeed academically, professionally and personally while a member of the GMS community. From The Weekly Digest Boston University School of Medicine September 16, 2022 Boston University and Boston Medical Center are members of the Newmarket Business Improvement District (NBID) and all employees and students now have free access to the shuttles that the NBID operates. In order to board the shuttles, please be sure you have your BU or BMC ID card with you to show the driver. All shuttles will be marked with NBID signage and are operated by A&A Metro. Fall 2022 Welcome BBQ Closes Out a Successful First Week of Class
This year's newest GMS students closed out their first week of classes with a Welcome BBQ, co-sponsored by Boston University School of Public Health. The Friday, September 9 event brought first-year GMS and SPH students together for food, music and lawn games outside on Talbot Green. It was catered by Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen -- located just a few minutes away from campus. The BBQ was one of several fall programming events planned at GMS this semester. Welcome to Fall 2022 at GMS!
Welcome – or welcome back – to another year at Graduate Medical Sciences! Our campus is quickly filling up with students once again as we prepare for classes to start in just over one week. This year, GMS is welcoming a brand-new class of 425 new students – master’s, PhDs, and MD/PhDs – to campus. Our newest class comes from 24 different countries and 40 different states. They’re entering GMS with undergraduate degrees from 212 different colleges and universities around the world. STaRS and UROP Scholars Present at GMS Summer Research Symposium
This year’s Summer Training as Research Scholars (STaRS) cohort culminated their 10-week onsite internships with the GMS Summer Research Symposium held on August 11, 2022. Hosted in Hiebert Lounge, the GMS Summer Research Symposium gave the STaRS scholars an opportunity to present their independent research projects to audiences of GMS faculty, BUSM faculty, staff and students. The symposium was open to all summer undergraduate students on campus and it was also attended by three summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) scholars. Daniel Cifuentes, PhD, Studies RNA Regulation with Zebrafish and Viruses
This summer, Dr. Daniel Cifuentes, an assistant professor of biochemistry at Graduate Medical Sciences, received one of several $75,000 BU Ignition Awards aimed at helping promising research initiatives find a potential pathway to commercial success. The Cifuentes Lab works on a variety of projects that study the fundamental mechanisms of RNA regulation, a universal process for all life on Earth.
