
Fourteen Students Join Summer 2023 GMS STaRS Program Cohort
Earlier in June, 14 students arrived to campus to begin their work in the 2023 Summer Training as Research Scholars (STaRS) Program cohort through Graduate Medical Sciences. The 2023 cohort includes six second-year undergraduates, four third-year undergraduates, two fourth-year undergraduates and two first-year medical students from Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. GMS Celebrates Pride at 2023 Red Sox Pride Celebration Game
Congratulations to the eight GMS students who won tickets to the Boston Red Sox Pride Celebration game on Tuesday, June 13! The raffle, held by the Community Catalyst Center, ran for one week between May 31 and June 7. The students who won the raffle included: Darby Gavin Mylene Gorzynski Varuna Jasodanand Ashley Mainville Anosha Khawaja-Lopez Jillianne Son Each student won two tickets -- one for themselves and one for a guest. PhD Student Spotlight: Michelle Nguyen
Michelle Nguyen is a PhD candidate in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology & Biophysics. She works in the lab of Associate Professor of Microbiology John Connor at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL). Michelle’s research studies how SARS-CoV-2 interacts with the inner lining of blood vessels in order to understand the effect of the virus on the endothelium and endothelial cells. Michelle is a recipient of a Draper Fellowship, which will allow her to conduct her own research under the supervision of a University faculty advisor and a Draper technical staff supervisor. Over 300 Graduate Medical Sciences students walked during the 2023 Commencement exercises at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center on Thursday, May 18. The day’s events included two ceremonies: the Master’s Convocation Ceremony at 10 a.m. and the MD & PhD Convocation Ceremony at 3 p.m. The ceremonies welcomed graduates from August 2022 and January 2023, as well as degree candidates from May 2023 and August 2023. Following the ceremonies, graduates and their families enjoyed a catered reception and photo opportunities at BU Malvern Field. Two GMS Students Win Big at Annual Innovate@BU New Venture Competition
Teams Win $72,000 in Funding at Innovate@BU's New Venture Competition BU Today; May 2, 2023 Congratulations to two GMS students and their teams for winning big in this month's annual Innovate@BU New Venture Competition! Stamatios Liapis (PhD, Computational Neuroscience, '23) and his team from Enlaye won the General Track first-place prize of $20,000. PhD Spotlight: Matthew Reiss ’23
Matthew Reiss is a PhD candidate in the Biomolecular Pharmacology program at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Matt’s research in the lab of Rachel Flynn, PhD, studies the role that a long non-coding RNA, TERRA, plays in the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) pathway for mammalian cancer cells.
