
Dan Tzizik, PA, Participates in Innovative Readiness Training Mission with New Hampshire National Guard
Dan Tzizik, associate director of didactic education for the Physician Assistant Program, participated in a two-week-long Innovative Readiness Training mission with the New Hampshire National Guard, where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has been a member of the NH National Guard for 19 years and joined the BU PA Program as a faculty member in 2020. Tzizik is also a faculty mentor for the GMS Community Catalyst Center gMAV affinity group, which seeks to promote a deeper sense of belonging and recognition for military-affiliated and veteran students by celebrating their multidimensional experiences across the GMS programs. C3 Kicks Off the Summer and Builds Community at First Ice Cream Social
Students, faculty and staff from across Graduate Medical Sciences kicked off the first month of summer at the GMS Community Catalyst Center's first Ice Cream Social on June 29. Hosted in the C3 Suite, the social was a chance for the GMS community to gather together, take a break from summer work and catch up with peers. GMS Anatomy & Neurobiology Professor Uses Artificial Intelligence to Better Predict Dementia Onset
Dr. Rhoda Au, professor of anatomy & neurobiology in Graduate Medical Sciences, is part of a research team working with artificial intelligence to predict dementia onset. The team is led by Dr. Vijaya B. Kolachalama, an assistant professor at Boston University School of Medicine who is an expert on using advanced computer technology to make more informed medical diagnoses. GMS Welcomes 17 Students into 2022 STaRS Program Cohort
This week, Graduate Medical Sciences will welcome the 17 students who make up the 2022 Summer Training as Research Scholars (STaRS) program cohort. STaRS is a program designed to promote more equitable access to graduate education for students historically underrepresented in science and medicine. Throughout the summer program, the STaRS cohort will have the opportunity to participate in research and enhance the skills required for successful entry into, and completion of, a graduate or MD/PHD program in biomedical sciences. “The End of the Beginning”: GMS Celebrates First In-Person Commencement Since 2019
Pomp and circumstance returned to Graduate Medical Sciences for the first time since 2019 at last week’s commencement ceremonies. Over 300 students walked during the in-person exercises at the BU Track & Tennis Center, including graduates from September 2021 and January 2022, as well as May 2022 and August 2022 degree candidates. Student Spotlight: Tom Morin (PhD ’22)
Tom Morin (PhD ’22), a fifth-year student in the Graduate Program for Neuroscience, grew up in Braintree, Mass. Faculty and staff from across Graduate Medical Sciences and the Boston University Medical Campus gathered in the Robert W. Wilkins Boardroom on April 27 to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Deborah Stearns-Kurosawa and Dr. Shinichiro Kurosawa. Dr. Stearns-Kurosawa and Dr. Kurosawa joined BU in 2008, relocating their research from Oklahoma to New England. They currently serve as associate professors in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
