Description of Elective:
The global health (GH) elective is for medical students interested in undertaking a minimum of four weeks of clinical or research work abroad. The elective exposes students to diseases, treatments, medical systems, and patient populations in other parts of the world with an emphasis on low-resource settings. The School of Medicine has a few established affiliations with hospitals/medical schools overseas (“inside electives”), but students may choose other elective sites (“outside electives”) with approval from Dr. Leanza, Director of Global Health Programs. Students must be conversant with the language spoken in the host country unless there is a provision for interpreters or the elective is dedicated to language acquisition.
Any student wishing to undertake a GH elective must complete the steps here: How to Set Up a 4th-Year GH Elective. Students may add GH electives to their fourth-year schedules no later than 6 weeks before the start date of the elective, the minimum time required to complete mandatory responsibilities before departure.
Students who are approved for GH electives may apply for a travel grant to help defray elective costs. Each award is up to $2000 with the final amount awarded according to the program’s selection criteria including the budget submitted by the student. The Global Health Program prioritizes travel grants for students traveling to low- or middle-income countries (LMIC). While students undertaking electives in high or upper-middle income countries (UMIC) are still welcome to apply for travel grants, awards for electives in these locations will likely be smaller than awards for electives in LMIC. Travel grant applications are processed on a rolling basis with a funding determination sent to the student within 3 weeks of submission.
