End-of-Semester Mix & Mingle Social Returns for Another Successful Year!

Over 200 Graduate Medical Sciences community members -- students, faculty and staff -- attended the 2024 End-of-Semester Mix & Mingle, hosted in collaboration between GMS, the Community Catalyst Center, and GMS Student Affairs. The annual event, held this year on Thursday, Dec. 5 in Hiebert Lounge, included a wide array of appetizers and desserts, a bar, games and live music from GMS Marketing & Communications Specialist Mike Bloom. Students who attended also had the opportunity to participate in a raffle to win one of 15 different prizes. Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Mohsan Saeed Featured in The Brink

West Nile, Zika, Coronavirus: This BU Researcher Is Taking On Some of the World’s Most Serious Viruses—and He Plans to Win The Brink; Nov. 21, 2024 Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Mohsan Saeed was featured in a recent article from The Brink about his research tackling some of the most serious diseases in the world, such as West Nile virus, Zika virus and SARS-CoV-2. Saeed's lab, started in 2020, is located within the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL). Read more about Saeed's work in the article!

GMS Faculty Spotlight: Dennis Jones, PhD

Graduate Medical Sciences faculty member Dennis Jones, PhD, is an assistant professor of pathology & laboratory medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Research in Jones' lab seeks to understand immune system suppression in breast cancers, with a focus on dysfunction of blood vessels in tumors. Jones recently received one of 11 National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Moonshot Scholar Awards, as well as a National Institutes of Health ReWARD R01 grant that will balance both research and outreach elements. Crystal Vejar is a second-year student in the Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MAMS) Program at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. A first-generation, non-traditional student and a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, Vejar has taken a unique path to Graduate Medical Sciences. Monday, Nov. 4, marks the beginning of Boston University's 2024 First-Generation College Celebration Week, which recognizes the success and achievements of BU first-generation students across our campuses. Each year, BU, the Newbury Center and other offices mark the occasion with a week-long celebration program, full of events like workshops, social activities, seminars and networking opportunities. Community Catalyst Center Halloween Social Brings 70+ Students for Pumpkin Painting and More

Over 70 students attended the Community Catalyst Center's Halloween Social, hosted on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in L-401. The two-hour event brought attendees together for an evening of pumpkin and canvas painting, snacks and beverages, and Halloween spirit, complete with spooky tunes and decorations. Another highlight was the popcorn made by the GMS movie theater-style popcorn machine throughout the event. Attending students came from a variety of GMS programs, both master's and PhD. Introducing the First GMS Cohort of American Cancer Society Post-Baccalaureate Research Fellows

This year, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine welcomed its first cohort of four scholars to its new American Cancer Society Center for Diversity in Cancer Research Training (ACS-DICR) Post-Baccalaureate Research Fellows Program. The two-year Post-Baccalaureate Fellows Program aims to enhance diversity in the cancer research workforce by increasing the number of individuals from underrepresented groups in biomedical science. Throughout the program, students will conduct biomedical research under the supervision of a faculty mentor. This mentored research will produce a defined project, alongside individual professional development, support services, travel to scientific meetings, networking opportunities and more.
