Emergency Medicine Selective

The Emergency Medicine Selective is a four-week clinical experience designed to immerse students in providing efficient emergency department care, emphasizing the timely evaluation, management, and disposition of undifferentiated patients. At Boston Medical Center, a high-volume Level 1 trauma center, students will engage directly with patient assessment and treatment under the supervision of senior residents and faculty, gaining exposure to a diverse array of medical conditions, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic interventions. This experience cultivates essential competencies in the management of medical emergencies and fosters an understanding of how prompt and effective emergency care influences patient safety and subsequent inpatient and outpatient management. Moreover, the selective underscores the emergency department’s pivotal function as a primary access point within the healthcare system, knowledge vital for all physicians involved in patient referral, consultation, or transfer.
