I have some questions…

What is this page for?

This page is designed to support first-year PiBS students who are searching for faculty mentors. It was created to support students navigating our complex research environment and aid them in their rotation selections, as well as provide better contextual information to prospective applicants. We also want to celebrate the variety of research done through our umbrella program.

I’m not sure whether I am eligible to be on this webpage.

This page is intended to summarize the many faculty mentors that can support students in the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PiBS) at the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. This requires a GMS appointment and membership in one of the programs under the PiBS umbrella. If you have or currently rotate students, that means you are eligible. If you have never rotated a PiBS student and wish to, you should contact the Advising Chair, Matt Jones (mattj@bu.edu) to identify whether you are eligible.

I’m eligible to rotate students. How come I’m not on this webpage?

NOTE: The webpage is under construction and so very few people are there. Click here to preview the page; it will update as responses come in. The answer below is the same as “first time joining” instructions.

You must submit a form to be added to this webpage. This not only makes the process fair and systematic, but also ensures no out-of-date information is accidentally shared.

While comprehensiveness is the aspiration, the changing nature of grant funding, faculty membership, and awareness of this page means it will not be exhaustive. However, we all invite faculty to participate.

Is filling out this form the same as signing up to take students this Fall?

No. This page exists only to share existing information about our community. Signing up for rotations is an established process between program heads and the advising committee. Joining this page is not a promise to students that you are accepting students, nor does it commit you to any specific rotation. We hope this page will eventually include all faculty with active PiBS appointments regardless of their future plans. To start taking PiBS students, please speak with your program head for guidance.

What if I’m not sure I can take students in the near future?

We encourage faculty join this page not just to help new students find faculty mentors but also enhance visibility of our program and collaborative environment. As it is uncommon for our whole community to be in one place, we hope this will be one way to showcase the goings-on of our program and celebrate all parts of the organization in its entirety.

How thorough should I be in my description?

You do not need to rebuild the wheel if you have a working description that meets the same level of depth requested; however, please keep your description brief and clear. Your target audience is first-year students and prospective applicants. Try to focus on details that will not change over time as to mitigate the need for edits. You may list recent accomplishments or publications, though we recommend providing a link to a page that is routinely updated as to avoid information becoming out-of-date too quickly.
