BU Women in Science and Engineering Workshop 3/4/11

BU Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) will host a 2011 Research Networking Workshop

DATE: Friday, March 4, 2011

LOCATION: One Silber Way, 9th floor

TIME: 10:00am-2:00pm

This workshop is open to both Charles River & Medical campus faculty.

The goals for this event are to promote research collaborations and peer mentoring. The workshop will begin with very brief (3-5 min) presentations of research interests by faculty members with particular emphasis on developing areas and needs. These minute-presentations will be followed by lunch in groups with common research interests and needs. Last year’s workshop led to several new collaboration and we would like to build on this success.

This year we would like to hand out an abstract of your research interests (with visuals) to participants, and with your permission, to post the abstracts on the WISE web site. In order to compile these handouts before the meeting please send your information as a pdf file by Monday February 28 to wisersvp@bu.edu.

The final workshop session will be focused on practical steps to achieve your career goals, particularly through peer mentoring. Peer (or horizontal) mentoring is usually done in groups of 3-7 people who are at the same career stage.  An excellent example of women scientists who used this model with great success can be found in Ellen Daniell’s book _Every Other Thursday_ (about a peer mentoring group that met regularly). Complimentary copies of the book will be available at the workshop. (Dr. Daniell will later be visiting WISE on April 6!).

The schedule for the event is below.

10:00am-12:30pm : Introductions of individual faculty members and their work

12:30-1:30pm:  Lunch with groups by research focus

1:30-2:00pm :Peer mentoring discussion break-out

We encourage you to come for as little or as long as your schedule will permit, to submit material as you feel appropriate, and to let us know if you are interested in leading the discussion of a break-out research group or a peer mentoring group. There are some funds to support the development of these groups after the workshop.

Please send your lunch rsvp and/or abstract by February 28 to wisersvp@bu.edu. If you can only attend for a specific time slot, any participation is welcome; please let us know when you will be able to come so we can schedule your individual research presentation accordingly. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop on March 4!

If you are interested in the event but cannot attend, please contact us. We can make arrangements for you to receive handouts, present your interests by proxy, and/or web participation through Skype.
