Dr. James Feldman Honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society

We are proud to announce that Dr. James Feldman, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of the Emergency Department Research Section, has received the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee Chair Service Award, which recognizes exceptional leadership and service to the Society. He will receive the award at the Society's annual meeting on April 30th.

Dr. Feldman and has held many clinical, academic, and administrative positions at Boston City Hospital / Boston Medical Center, and the Boston University School of Medicine. In addition he has received a myriad of prestigious awards including the Boston University School of Medicine Chair Award in Emergency Medicine, the MACEP Distinguished Service Award, the MACEP Vanguard Award, the MACEP President’s Award, the MACEP Pinnacle Award, and the Massachusetts Medical Society Grant V. Rodkey Award.

Dr. James Feldman in Local News for Marathon Training

In addition, Dr. Feldman is writing a blog about his experience training for the Marathon, and his thoughts on the history of Emergency Medicine at Boston City Hospital / Boston Medical Center.

Dr. Kerry McCabe Selected to be New Residency Program Director

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kerry McCabe has been selected as the new Program Director for Boston Medical Center's Emergency Medicine Residency!

A graduate of our residency program, Dr. McCabe currently serves as Associate Program Director, Assistant Dean of the Education College, and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine. For over ten years she has been an integral part of resident and medical student education within our department, a leader in residency curriculum development, a driving force behind countless educational innovations at BMC, and a mentor for numerous medical students, residents, and junior faculty.

Dr. Jeff Schneider Selected as Leader of Graduate Medical Education

Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Schneider for being selected as the new Designated Institutional Official (DIO) in Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Boston Medical Center!

The DIO is a senior member of BMC’s Medical Affairs Department and is responsible for ensuring the quality of residency and clinical fellowship training at BMC. Dr. Schneider was chosen for the position after an extensive national search.

Dr. Thea James Receives 2014 Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award

This award recognizes a healthcare provider who embodies characteristics of compassionate care such as respect, interpersonal communication, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.

Dr. James was cited for her extraordinary ability to interact "with patients in a truly authentic and compassionate manner. She sees the person behind each injury and searches for that person’s story. Her sensitivity, communications skills, optimism and kindness have deeply impacted the lives of her patients and families."

Dr. James is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Director and Co-founder of the Violence Intervention Advocate Program (VIAP), Co-founder of Unified for Global Healing, and President of the Boston Medical Center Medical and Dental Faculty. She received the award on November 20, 2014.

Project ASSERT Celebrates 20 Years of Service and Research

Congratulations to Project ASSERT, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year!

Project ASSERT (Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services, Education, and Referral to Treatment) is an innovative BMC Emergency Department-based program that is a national leader in substance abuse interventions. Founded in 1994 by Drs. Ed and Judith Bernstein and the Department of Social Work, Project ASSERT connects patients with substance abuse treatment programs, opioid overdose prevention, primary care, and social support services. The program is staffed by health promotion advocates who are experienced substance abuse counselors and represent the surrounding communities served by the hospital. Most recently, Project ASSERT has channeled its advocacy efforts towards improving the accessibility of substance abuse treatment services for LGBTQ patients and advocating for policies that promote the use of intranasal naloxone rescue kits.

Dr. Andrew Ulrich Receives AMA Medal of Valor

The American Medical Association (AMA) has presented BMC's Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Andrew Ulrich, with the prestigious AMA Medal of Valor in recognition of his courage and leadership during the Boston Marathon bombings.

Boston Medical Center received the first group of critically injured patients only minutes after being notified of the event. Dr. Ulrich played a pivotal role in saving the lives of the 28 patients presenting to the ED from the marathon.

We are very proud of the incredible work that Dr. Ulrich did on that day and continues to do every day here at Boston Medical Center.

The BBC News World Service has featured Dr. Ricky Kue and Dr. Andrew Ulrich in the program "Trauma: The Fight for Life."

Dr. Kue, Assistant Professor and Associate Medical Director of Boston EMS, Police & Fire for the City of Boston, and Dr. Ulrich, Associate Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the BMC Emergency Department, discuss research frontiers in trauma care as well as BMC's role in treating victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

Dr. Peter Burke, Chief of Acute Care and Trauma Surgery, and Joseph Blansfield, Trauma Program Manager, are also interviewed during the broadcast.

BMC To Be Featured In New Medical Documentary

October 10th, 2014

Boston Medical Center is proud to take part in a new medical documentary created by ABC. This mini-series focuses on BMC and two other Boston-area hospitals as they care for patients with traumatic injuries or medical emergencies like stroke or heart attack. Tentatively called "The Golden Hour," the documentary-style television series will highlight the exceptional care that critically ill patients receive upon entering our Emergency Department and throughout their hospital stay. The team from ABC is expected to film at BMC for 10-12 weeks, starting the week of Oct. 6, and the series is slated to air in early 2015. The article, "Boston EMS Transitions to Warm Zone Operations after the Boston Marathon Bombing," discusses the role of Boston EMS during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and lessons learned from the experience.
