Doctoral Students
As President Brown’s email on 3/26 indicated, in-person University Commencement ceremonies have been postponed. BUMC Provost and BUSM Dean Antman followed this by saying “we are determined to celebrate all of your collective achievements and accomplishments virtually”. In the near future, GMS will send specific details about our virtual celebration on May 14 as we are actively adapting to this changing situation. As more information becomes available we will update the GMS Commencement pages. Additionally, we will post the new date for the in-person Commencement ceremony late summer/early fall when available.

Graduate Regalia
NOTICE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the in-person commencement has been postponed, GMS is actively adapting to this situation and are still in the process of planning how to move forward, please keep an eye out for out updates. B&N has assured us that if students would like to return their regalia, they can get a refund up. Please check with BU B&N for eligibility and terms and conditions.
Students have two sets of regalia to be mindful of when thinking about May’s ceremony: their own regalia; and the regalia of their hooder. Please see detailed instructions below for ordering each type of regalia.
Please order regalia online before March 26th.
Orders placed online for campus pick-up will be available beginning May 6 at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore. 910 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215; (617) 267-8484
For those who choose not to order online, a VERY limited selection of regalia will be available for rent at the Bookstore beginning May 6. While every attempt will be made to provide walk-ins with the regalia appropriate for your degree, sufficient inventory cannot be guaranteed.

- The rental fee is $95.
MD/PhD DUAL DEGREE STUDENTS

- Select Ship to my Home (ideal)
- Select Graduation Regalia (complete set of cap, gown, tassel & hood) ($95), complete form
- Indicate MD-PhD as Area of Study and add to cart (You will receive two hoods, MD (green) and PhD (blue)).
- The rental fee is $95.

Hooder Information and Regalia
A hooder places the academic hood over the student’s head during the commencement ceremony. Hooders are typically a BUSM/GMS faculty member such as your PI research mentor, program advisor or program director. Occasionally, someone, not BU affiliated (such as a family member) will hood you. All hooders must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and wear regalia.
Please note that the student is responsible for asking and confirming with your chosen faculty member that they will be attending the May 14th Commencement ceremony and have ordered regalia. Please indicate your hooder when completing the Commencement form (you will receive via email). Faculty regalia deadline through GMS is 2/15/19.
NON-BU HOODER REGALIA
If your selected hooder is NOT BUSM faculty, please forward these instructions to your hooder to order their regalia.
- Go to: herffjones.com
- Select Boston University from the drop-down menu. Click continue.
- The next screen will indicate that the site is taking orders for BU’s All-University Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 17. That is fine but NOTE that the School of Medicine’s MD & PhD ceremony is on May 14. Please don’t be confused by the date. Click continue.
- Click “Order Your Cap and Gown.”
- The next screen will confirm the order of cap, gown, and tassel. The rental fee is $95.
- Complete the next series of screens with specific hooder information.
- As a non-BU hooder you should enter the student’s name and information in the “Customer Info” section and the hooder as the “Participant.”
- You will be able to review and confirm your order before finalizing it.
