On Monday, July 1, Melissa L. Gilliam took office as Boston University’s 11th president. Dr. Gilliam is a physician, educator, scholar, research scientist and leader in higher education who was named as the next president in fall 2023.

Before coming to BU, Dr. Gilliam served as a provost and executive vice president of The Ohio State University, and previously spent most of her career at University of Chicago.

BU Today sat down with Dr. Gilliam to discuss her first impressions of the University, opportunities challenges she anticipates during her term and her hopes and ambitions for the time ahead.
