751 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery-Maxillofacial Trauma and Temporomandibular Joint Surgery (TMJ Surgery)

Description of Elective
This Maxillofacial Trauma/TMJ Surgery elective is specifically intended for medical students enrolled in the combined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS-MD) program. The length of this elective should be 8 consecutive weeks and must occur in the fourth year, after the completion of the requirements for 4th year medical students enrolled as full-time students in the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
The purpose of this elective is to provide an immersive experience to students. Students will be expected to participate in the care of patients requiring Maxillofacial Trauma/TMJ Surgery. Students are expected to participate from the initial visit to final discharge and are involved in the decision-making process under appropriate faculty supervision.
Students are expected to be full members of the OMFS care team, including ward rounds, on-call responsibilities, management of patients in the outpatient setting and the operating room. They will also be expected to attend and participate in all departmental meetings, conferences and didactic teaching sessions. Ward rounds are conducted daily with the surgical team. Grand rounds are held every Monday morning and includes reviews of the in-patient services as well as resident led presentation. Teaching didactics are conducted on Fridays. There are also interdisciplinary conferences conducted on the medical campus; Interdisciplinary Trauma Surgery case conference, 3D Virtual Surgery computer sessions, and Airway Conference.
Supervision includes problem-oriented conferences on surgical floors, ward rounds, Surgical ICU, operating room, and in the assigned outpatient clinic. The students will be evaluated on a monthly basis by the primary clinical faculty in their specific rotation. Mid-clerkship feedback will be provided by the Program Director and/or the associate Program Director and points for improvement relayed orally and in writing.
Students enrolled in the combined OMFS-MD program who are interested in this elective must speak with the OMFS Program Director.

Description of Elective
This Pathology and Reconstruction elective is specifically intended for medical students enrolled in the combined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS-MD) program. The length of this elective should be 8 consecutive weeks and must occur in the fourth year, after the completion of the requirements for 4th year medical students enrolled as full-time students in the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
The purpose of this elective is to provide an immersive experience to students. Students will be expected to participate in the entire process of comprehensively treating Head and Neck Pathology and Reconstructive Surgery Patients. They will also have the opportunity to work closely with faculty to expand their knowledge in complex major head and neck pathology, including microvascular reconstruction in an operating room setting and in a clinical setting.
Students are expected to be full members of the OMFS care team, including ward rounds, on-call responsibilities, management of patients in the outpatient setting and the operating room. They will also be expected to attend and participate in all departmental meetings, conferences and didactic teaching sessions. Ward rounds are conducted daily with the surgical team. Description of Elective
This Orthognathic Surgery elective is specifically intended for medical students enrolled in the combined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS-MD) program. The length of this elective should be 8 consecutive weeks and must occur in the fourth year, after the completion of the requirements for 4th year medical students enrolled as full-time students in the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.
The purpose of this elective is to provide an immersive experience to students in so far as they are expected to perform at a level of a PGY1 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) resident in the current discipline. Students will be expected to participate in the entire comprehensive treatment process of patients requiring Orthognathic Surgery. They will have the opportunity to work in the out-patient setting treating the needs of Oral and Maxillofacial Dentoalveolar Surgery and Maxillofacial Infection patients. These include, but are not limited to: uncomplicated and complicated surgical exodontia (including third molar impactions), pre-prosthetic surgery, implant placement and bone grafting. The student will also have the opportunity to treat patients with infections of the maxillofacial region and deep neck space infections.
