650 Cardiology

Description of Elective:

The Cardiology Elective will expose the medical student to the field of Cardiology as practiced within an integrated multispecialty group. The rotation takes place in the Cardiology Department at Kaiser San Jose with rotations both in the clinic and hospital setting. The student will learn about the most common Cardiology conditions such as coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, hypertension and congenital heart disease. Learning about various diagnostic modalities in the evaluation of various cardiac conditions such as stress testing, coronary angiography and other imaging modalities such as echocardiography, CT angiography and cardiac MRI are also part of the experience. Acquiring a general understanding of the various management options for patients with cardiac conditions, such as appropriate medical therapy, coronary percutaneous interventions, and coronary, valvular or other structural heart surgery will be imparted.

Students will work closely with a faculty member to evaluate patients, perform some procedures under direct supervision and be exposed to a broad spectrum of cardiac conditions presenting to a community hospital and medical center setting. They will be assigned to one of seven attendings during the weekday hours of 8:30-5:30 pm, who will supervise them while evaluating consultations both in the outpatient and inpatient settings.

 

651 Dermatology

Note: Students will be allowed time off for interviews while they are rotating, however, if a student misses more than 25% of the rotation, no grade will be assigned and no credit will be given for the rotation.

Description of Elective:

The General Dermatology Elective takes place in the Dermatology Department at Kaiser Santa Clara, Kaiser San Jose, and Kaiser Milpitas with rotations both in the clinic and hospital setting. The goal is to expose the medical student to the field of Dermatology as practiced within an integrated multispecialty group. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member to evaluate patients, perform procedures under direct supervision including Mohs surgery, contact Dermatology, pediatric Dermatology, and complex medical Dermatology and be exposed to a broad spectrum of dermatologic conditions presenting to a community hospital and medical center setting. Medical students will learn how to perform dermatology focused history and physicals, develop a methodical assessment and plan and perform supervised procedures for diagnostic testing and/or treatment of some of these patients.

 

652 Emergency Medicine

Note: Students are asked to not register in months where they anticipate residency interviews. Students who think they want to apply to Emergency Medicine residency should apply to do the elective as early as possible in their fourth year in order to determine if the field is a good fit for them.

Description of Elective:

This elective is for students to learn about the daily practice of emergency medicine in a busy community hospital setting. This can be considered an introduction to the field and may help the student determine if this specialty is well suited for their career pathway. It takes place in the emergency department at Kaiser San Jose, a community hospital with nearly 60,000 ER patient visits a year. This ED has access to a 24 hour cardiac cath lab, is a designated stroke center capable of providing TPA, and boasts the support of many subspecialities who can advise and help in complicated cases. Medical students will be assigned to one to two supervising attendings for each of their shifts. They will work closely with the attendings to see patients independently, obtain a focused history and physical, report their findings, and develop a basic plan on how to diagnose and treat the patient. The student will also learn how to interpret the lab and imaging results of their patients. This emergency department sees all patient acuity levels and has a significant amount of patients who need a high level of care. The student will also see how the ED team members (including physicians, nurses, and technicians) work together to achieve their goal of superior patient care.

 

653 Orthopedics

Description of Elective:

Students will learn the basic exams and history components of musculoskeletal care, fracture care and other Orthopedic injuries pertaining to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves which allow you to move, and be active. Students will also perform physical exams and observe operation room cases.

Medical students will work with orthopedic surgery attendings one on one at the clinic and hospital. They will see patients independently as well as in tandem with the attending, obtain a focused history and physical, report to the attending with his/her findings and develop a basic plan on how to diagnose and treat the patient. This elective will have both inpatient and outpatient experiences.

Students will obtain experience with Sports Medicine, Total Joint Replacement, General Orthopedics, Hand Specialty, Ready access to Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, Pediatric Specialty, Fracture Clinic, Fastrac Surgery, and Orthopedic Education. Students will be given enough of an experience where they can decide if Orthopedics is a career that they may pursue.

 

654 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Description of Elective:

Students will obtain a broad exposure to the disorders that are treated by PM&R and will learn how to do a functional exam that includes neurologic and musculoskeletal assessment. It will be an introduction to electro-diagnostic medicine and interventional spine procedures and also have an exposure to inpatient rehabilitation care.

The student will become familiar with a variety of functionally limiting medical disorders and physiatric approach to evaluation and management. The student will learn to do a physical assessment with an emphasis on function. He/she will work with other specialists and ancillary healthcare workers in a comprehensive team based approach toward care.

The elective will take place at the outpatient clinic, interventional suite, along with the hospital at Kaiser Permanente, San Jose Medical Center. If possible during the selected block, students may have the opportunity to rotate at the Kaiser Permanente Vallejo’s comprehensive rehabilitation facility, but students should expect that they will rotate primarily at the San Jose location.

 

655 Cardiology

Description of Elective:

The MS IV General Cardiology Elective takes place in the Cardiology Department at Kaiser Santa Clara with rotations in both the clinic and hospital setting. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member to evaluate patients, perform some procedures under direct supervision and be exposed to a broad spectrum of cardiac conditions presenting to a community hospital and medical center setting.

During this rotation, students will develop a general understanding of the most common Cardiology conditions such as coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, hypertension and congenital heart disease.

They will be exposed to the various diagnostic modalities in the evaluation of various cardiac conditions such as stress testing, coronary angiography and other imaging modalities such as echocardiography, CT angiography and cardiac MRI.

Medical students will work with several Cardiologists during the weekday hours of 8 AM – 5 PM who will supervise them while evaluating consultations both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Medical students will be able to learn how to perform cardiology focused history and physicals, develop a methodical assessment and plan and be involved in the diagnostic testing of some of these patients.

Skills which will be acquired during the rotation include:

  • Ability to perform cardiology focused History and Physicals and focused cardiac exam including use of stethoscope
  • Ability to develop a differential diagnosis
  • Ability to determine indications for various diagnostic modalities
  • Ability to interpret cardiac testing results
  • Ability to assist with the performance of stress testing, echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations
