The Art of Mental Health

Speaker:

Amanda Bravo, MA, R-DMT

Expressive Arts Therapy is a holistic approach that combines the use of various art forms such as visual arts, music, dance/movement, drama, and writing to improve mental health and well-being. The therapist and client work together to explore the client’s inner experiences, emotions, and physical sensation through the creative process, which can facilitate insight, understanding, and change. The use of expressive arts in human culture extends back to ancient times and has been used for self-expression, cultural and social understanding, and cognitive development. Science also shows that expressive arts therapy can activate the body’s relaxation response and natural healing mechanisms, as well as have a synergetic effect when using multiple modalities. It has been applied in various medical fields such as pain management, mental health, rehabilitation, palliative care, pediatrics and geriatrics.
