International Fellowship in Dermatopathology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, fellows will have acquired a strong foundation in basic dermatopathology and will be able to:

  • Recognize and interpret inflammatory (non-neoplastic) skin conditions as well as common benign and malignant skin neoplasms.
  • Apply ancillary diagnostic and research techniques effectively, including immunofluorescence, immunoperoxidase studies, and special stains.
  • Present evidence-based material clearly and concisely at academic conferences.
  • Understand and utilize basic research methodologies, including writing IRB proposals and conducting comprehensive literature and case reviews using various databases.
  • Teach dermatopathology effectively, thereby reinforcing and enhancing their own knowledge.

Additional Learning Opportunities

  1. Cutaneous Oncology Tumor Board
    Fellows are expected to attend, assist with clinical photography, and present required or requested cases. They may also be asked to provide concise literature reviews for rare or complex cases.
  2. Grand Rounds
    Participation includes attending sessions, assisting with photography, and presenting cases. Fellows are responsible for discussing cases with attending dermatopathologists prior to the conference and during/after patient viewings. Short literature reviews may be required.
  3. Journal Club
    Fellows must present at Journal Club at least twice per month. Each session should include discussion of one or two original articles and one or two clinicopathologic correlations in dermatopathology.
  4. Teaching
    Fellows will share in the teaching responsibilities by reviewing dermatopathology slides with residents at the microscope.

Educational Requirements

  • Graduation from medical school.
  • Completion of a dermatology or pathology residency outside the United States.

Language Proficiency
Applicants must meet TOEFL score requirements:

  • 575 on the paper-based test
  • 232 on the computer-based test
  • 90 on the internet-based test

Financial assistance & Visa:
If you are approved for a stipend, you will be affiliated with the university as a Visiting Researcher and will be issued a DS-2019 form, which will allow you to apply for a J-1 nonimmigrant visa as a research scholar under the Exchange Visitor Program.

Personal Statement
A written statement outlining the applicant’s intention to return to their home country and their plans to contribute to dermatopathology through diagnosis, teaching, and research.

Letters of Support
Institutional three letters endorsing the applicant’s qualifications and potential to contribute meaningfully to the field of dermatopathology.

Certificates or Degrees
Notarized or attested copies of your diplomas, including degrees, internship, and residency certificates, must be submitted along with a recent photograph.
