Class of 2026 Third Year Clerkship Scheduling Information

Third-year clerkships are scheduled through a lottery. We use the e*Value Optimization Scheduling (EVOS) tool, referred to as eValue. EVOS uses a mathematical and linear approach to optimize students’ schedules. Below is an overview of how to access the system and enter your preferences. Additional resources can be found at the bottom of the page.

Inputting Preferences (December 4-10, 2023):

Once logged in, you will be prompted to set your preferences for each of the 7 core clerkships and the selective. There are 8 pages to complete—one for each core clerkship and one for the selective.

  • For each clerkship, you can select a specific site or a specific block (or both).
  • A wild card option allows you to indicate flexibility (e.g., any block at a specific site or any site in a specific block).

The first preference carries the most weight in the lottery algorithm, so it is important to prioritize it carefully. The system is designed to maximize the number of students who receive their first-choice preferences, while still meeting everyone’s scheduling needs.

Important notes:

  • Research selective requires a separate application process, so do not input it here unless you’ve already applied.
  • Radiology is available in every block, however Emergency Medicine has more limited availability. If you are interested in Emergency Medicine, ensure your schedule is built around the available blocks.
  • You can fill out every preference row, leave some blank, or input only a few preferences. However, providing more data increases the likelihood of getting the rotations you want.
  • There are 16 possible scheduling paths for the third year, designed to ensure each student can complete all seven core clerkships and one selective within a feasible arrangement of blocks. When submitting lottery preferences, make sure your choices align with the block structure. Infeasible requests are less likely to result in your preferred schedule.

Special Circumstances:

You will have the option to write in a “special circumstances” comment box to clarify your preferences (e.g., “the most important thing for me is to remain local during certain Blocks”). Providing this information helps ensure an optimal schedule for all.
