USMLE Requirements & Registration

Exam Requirement

All students must sit for the USMLE Step 1 exam before the start of their third year. While a score is not required to begin clerkships, an insufficient score may require a retake, delaying the start of third-year clerkships.

Registration Process Timeline

  • October–November: Apply and schedule your exam date
    1. Visit the NBME website for application materials.
    2. Complete and submit the materials to the NBME.
    3. Receive your Scheduling Permit.
    4. Schedule your test date at a Prometric Test Center.

Application Process

  • November: Submit your application in two parts:

Part A: New Application

  1. Complete the online application.
    • Use your full legal name, which must match the name on your legal ID.
      • Use proper upper & lower case for full legal name.
  2. Select your preferred 3-month eligibility period (e.g., February–April).
  3. Review the summary for accuracy and save a copy for your records.
  4. Pay the Step 1 registration fee ($680) online or by check.

Part B: Certification of ID

  1. Print Application Form Part B.
  2. Attach a photo and sign the form.
  3. Email the completed form to Associate Registrar Ellie Kidson (ekidson@bu.edu).
DO NOT send a paper form to the Registrar’s Office. Paper forms will significantly extend the processing time, which can take longer than 6 weeks. Submitting electronically can reduce processing to less than 4 weeks.
  4. The Registrar’s Office will email the form to the NBME.

Verification Process

The NBME will verify your eligibility and process your application.

  • Processing time is 4-6 weeks (digital submissions are processed on the lower end, paper submissions may take longer than 6 weeks).
  • You will be notified by email/letter if there are any issues with your application.
  • You will be notified when your scheduling permit is posted.

Scheduling Your Test Date

  • November/December: Use your Scheduling Permit to reserve a test date.
    1. Take a photo of the Scheduling Permit and make a copy.
    2. Following the instructions on your Scheduling Permit, contact Prometric Test Center to schedule your test date.
    3. BRING your permit with you when you take your test. This is critical—you will not be able to take the exam without it.
