Unsung Black Heroes in Medicine: Event with Author Maria Smilios
This event originally took place as part of the Unsung Heroes in Medicine series and featured author Maria Smilios discussing her book The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis.
Presented in collaboration with the Alumni Medical Library, this program marked the third and final event in the Unsung Heroes in Medicine series. The discussion explored the overlooked contributions of Black nurses who cared for tuberculosis patients during the Civil War era, the systemic racism they faced, and the lasting legacy of their work in shaping modern healthcare and public health.
Unsung Heroes in Medicine highlights the critical yet often overlooked contributions of marginalized individuals in the history of healthcare and medicine, and examines how these histories continue to shape health equity today.
