Preliminary Program in Medicine

campus2The one year program in medicine at BMC provides residents who are planning to train in other subspecialties with a broad and diverse experience in internal medicine.  We have a very strong and competitive preliminary program in medicine, and accept 13 preliminary interns per year out of a total class of 57 interns.  Preliminary interns are fully integrated into the residency program, and complete all the same rotations as our categorical interns.  We have a diverse patient population at BMC, and preliminary interns rotate through the 2 campuses at BMC, as well as the West Roxbury VA.

Highlights of the preliminary program include: 1) Two one month elective blocks, where you can choose to do an inpatient or outpatient elective, a research block, or an ambulatory care rotation.  2) A half day continuity clinic which is optional for preliminary interns in order to accommodate your individual educational needs.

We offer both MICU and CCU blocks for 10-12 weeks total, and an emergency medicine block for 2-4 weeks.  The rest of the year includes general medicine ward time, and one or two inpatient subspecialty ward rotations (either Heme/Onc, Geriatrics, Cardiology or Renal).

We have a strong relationship with Neurology at BMC (Applicants who match in Neurology at BMC are guaranteed a preliminary spot at BMC if they so choose). In addition, housestaff from our one-year program have gone on to such specialties as Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and Radiology.   This internship year allows those going onto subspecialty training the opportunity to have a broad and hands-on exposure to internal medicine.  In addition, for those who are staying at BMC for subspecialty training, the relationships that you develop with internal medicine residents will serve you well in the future.

For further information regarding the preliminary program, please contact Dr. Beth Manning, Director of the Preliminary Program, and Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program (beth.manning@bmc.org).
