Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center (BMC) was formed in 1996 as a result of the merger of Boston City Hospital and Boston University Medical Center Hospital. BMC retains the medical staff, the adjacent facilities and both the academic and public service missions of its predecessors.

The Menino Pavilion, (formerly Boston City Hospital, BCH), one of the outstanding municipal teaching hospitals in the United States, was established in 1864 and has long been a center of excellence in patient care, education, and research. An acute care, full service hospital, Boston City traditionally provided high quality health care to inner city residents, fulfilling its mission as Boston’s only public hospital.

BCH served as a major site for medical student teaching as well as house officer and fellowship training in general internal medicine, subspecialty medicine, and emergency medicine.

House officers considering primary care careers, either academically-based or practice-based, will be particularly interested in the community oriented model of the ambulatory programs and inpatient services developed at BCH. The opening of the new inpatient facility in 1993 reflects the broad-based commitment of city government and the medical community to the programs and mission of Boston City Hospital. BCH has a long and distinguished history of vigorous research programs.

The East Newton Pavilion, (formerly Boston University Medical Center Hospital, BUMCH), founded in 1912, was one of the pioneers in combining the triad of patient care, physician training, and research.

The hospital serves the local community, as well as a broad referral network across New England, and offers training experiences which emphasize the use of the latest in modern technology and subspecialty expertise in the management of complex illness. General medicine inpatient and outpatient experience as well as specialized programs in cardiology and hematology-oncology forms the core of the BUMCH experience. The research facilities of the endowed Evans Memorial Department of Clinical Research are a major resource for residents interested in clinical or basic research experiences.

The Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center (VA) maintains 172 actute tertiary care beds in Boston as well as staffing 8 distinct primary care sites. Recently, two distinct campuses, each with long standing academic affiliations to either Boston University School of Medicine or Harvard Medical School have merged to create this new institution with a more diverse faculty and stimulating training environment.

The VA supports training programs in many medical and allied health specialties as well as clinical and basic science research. The Ambulatory Diagnostic and Treatment Center, a medical day hospital, offers unique training and experience in ambulatory medicine. A cutting edge computerized record keeping system also supports access to the Internet and several on-line clinical references facilitating teaching, learning and patient care

Affiliated community hospitals and neighborhood health centers offer experience in the spectrum of internal medicine seen in the community and interactions with community-based practicing internists. Resident rotations at the Quincy Medical Center, as well as continuity clinics in the neighborhood health centers, are supervised by full-time Boston University teaching faculty.
