Area of Research: Surgical informatics; post-surgical opioid use; clinical decision aids; disparities in surgical care; surgical education and training; health services research

Dr. Brendin Beaulieu-Jones is currently a General Surgery Resident and Clinical Instructor of General Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. He completed the National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics and Data Science Fellowship (T15LM00709-30) at Harvard Medical School. As part of this federally-funded fellowship, he completed two years of research under the mentorship of Dr. Gabriel Brat within the Surgical Informatics lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and earned a Masters of Biomedical Informatics from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Beaulieu-Jones investigated clinical decision support to optimize post-surgical opioid prescribing; examined the role of surgeon gestalt in clinical risk prediction; and applied machine learning methodologies to model uncertainty in clinical scenarios in order to inform patient management. Dr. Beaulieu-Jones participated in several multicenter research studies, including a study investigating outcomes of cardiopulmonary bypass after traumatic injury and a study using natural language processing to appropriately identify patients with long COVID.

During residency, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones completed multiple clinical research studies within the Department of Surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Under the direction of Dr. Michael Cassidy and Dr. Teviah Sachs in the Section of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones investigated disparities in surgical outcomes for patients with breast, gastric or liver cancer; assessed the current transplant surgery pipeline and changes in operative training during the coronavirus pandemic; and evaluated the impact of the pandemic on treatment outcomes. In addition, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones conducted several studies within the Section of Acute Care and Trauma under the mentorship of Dr. Sabrina Sanchez and Dr. Dane Scantling. Specifically, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones investigated the value of cross-sectional imaging in patients with ground-level falls; examined the impact of state-level assault weapon bans on firearm case fatality; and studied the impact of a protocol for the management of patients with multiple traumatic rib fractures. Dr. Beaulieu-Jones is the resident-lead and first-author on a multicenter study investigating the diagnostic accuracy of billing codes for complicated appendicitis. In addition, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones completed a systematic review on the optimal design of Morbidity and Mortality Conference and is currently conducting a prospective, educational initiative to advance conference objectives. At BMC, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones has also participated in several multicenter projects, including a study investigating the role of anti-fungal treatment for patients with upper gastrointestinal perforations and a second study evaluating outcomes of non-operative management of isolated right upper quadrant wounds. Lastly, under the mentorship of Dr. Jacquelyn Quin within the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the Veteran Affairs (VA) Boston Medical Center, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones has investigated the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation after surgical aortic valve replacement and evaluated the impact of travel distance on outcomes after cardiac surgery.

Dr. Beaulieu-Jones is an author of 3 book chapters and 45 publications, including 18 first-author publications. As of June 2023, Dr. Beaulieu-Jones has an additional 10 manuscripts which are currently under review or in press.
