Abdomen Clinical Experience
For all of our rotations, our fellows enjoy a very high volume of cases, as well as a high proportion of abnormal studies, leading to exposure to a large number of abnormal studies.
Our main experience for fellows is a combined MRI/CT rotation. In this rotation, there is a heavy volume of MRI of the liver, pancreaticobiliary system and pelvis. We also have a growing volume in prostate, rectal and cervical cancer staging MRI, as well as MR enterography. The CT component of this rotation includes imaging of a wide variety of acute pathology in both the ED and inpatient settings. In addition, we have a high volume of oncologic body CT. We utilize two state of the art dual energy CT (DECT) scanners, and we heavily utilize multiple DECT reconstruction tools including virtual non-contrast, low keV imaging, spectral curves and Iodine quantification for problem solving.
Our other main rotation is Ultrasound, in which a high volume of abdominal and pelvic ultrasound studies is performed. Ultrasound scanning is performed by dedicated technologists, but opportunities for fellows to scan patients are abundant.
We pride ourselves on the great working relationships that we have with our referring clinicians, including hepatobiliary and oncologic surgeons, trauma surgeons, gastroenterologists, ED physicians, internists and many others. These physicians regularly visit the reading room for consultations. We also hold several multidisciplinary conferences with our referring specialists, including hepatobiliary, colorectal, genitourinary tumor boards as well as a gastroenterology conference. The fellow leads and presents cases at all of these conferences, teaching them valuable case presentation and consultation skills
