The Faculty Affairs Office is pleased to announce that Associate Professor of Surgery Tracey Dechert, MD, has been named Distinguished Faculty of the Month for September.

Dr. Dechert is chief of trauma and acute care surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC). In 2014 Dr. Dechert and Megan Janeway, MD (then a medical student but now an attending surgeon at BMC), created Socially Responsible Surgery (SRS), which focuses on educating future surgeons about surgical equity. SRS provides multiple opportunities for medical students to do related research and publish in peer-reviewed journals, educate their peers, serve patients outside of their clinical responsibilities, and engage in advocacy. Dr. Dechert also was instrumental in developing the SRS Advocacy Elective to instruct medical students on health policy, activism and civic engagement at the local, state and national levels. Under her leadership, SRS has blossomed into a national organization with more than 20 chapters at institutions around the country.
