January 2022 Faculty Appointments, Promotions Announced

Congratulations to the following faculty on their recent appointment or promotion. 

Professor

Richard Freeman, Jr., MD, BUSM, Surgery, a transplant surgeon, chief academic officer and chief medical officer at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, is a leading innovator in health care delivery, strategic design, leadership development, talent acquisition, clinical practice management and clinical and academic programmatic development in complex healthcare systems. He previously served as vice dean for clinical affairs at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin and before that as chair of surgery at Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine. Freeman received his BA from Franklin & Marshall College, his MD from Jefferson Medical College and a master’s degree in healthcare leadership from Brown University. He completed a surgical residency at Harvard/New England Deaconess Hospital, now known as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston.

Ricardo Munarriz, MD, BUSM, Urology, director of the Center for Sexual Medicine at Boston Medical Center, one of the busiest sexual medicine practices in the country, has been recognized annually as one of best urologic surgeons in Boston Magazine’s Best Doctors since 2009. He also directs the Sexual, Reproductive and Transgender Fellowship, which provides the highest combined surgical volume in andrology, penile prosthesis and transgender surgery fellowship experience in the country. President of Society of Prosthetic Urologic Surgeons, he has trained and mentored more than 40 urology residents, seven post-urology residency fellows, and 16 research fellows.

Associate Professor

Hillary Mull, PhD, MPP, BUSM, Surgery, a health services researcher in patient safety, develops informatics tools for adverse event surveillance in surgical care in the Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research (CHOIR). She has focused her 15-year career at the VA on informatics-based adverse event surveillance. She has developed considerable expertise in data mining techniques of VA medical records to detect adverse events in understudied areas, including outpatient surgery and invasive non-surgical procedures. Mull’s outpatient surgery surveillance tool was implemented at the VA in 2019.

Jordana Phillips, MD, BUSM, Radiology, has focused her work primarily in Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) for breast cancer evaluation. She has multiple industry- and foundation-funded prospective trials studying CEM’s role for breast cancer screening, evaluating its diagnostic performance and the relative cost assessment of the exam compared with other common breast imaging exams. She was invited to participate in the ACR’s effort to develop a formal lexicon for CEM for the Breast Imaging and Reporting Database System (BI-RADS) and co-leads the ACR’s larger effort to develop a national Breast Imaging research registry to include demographic data, imaging data as well as images, pathology data and samples, and follow-up data. She is spearheading multiple retrospective studies evaluating CEM’s performance in the clinical setting to better understand its value and to refine the technical protocol.
