Osamu Sakai Awarded September Distinguished Faculty of the Month

The Faculty Affairs Office is pleased to announce that Osamu Sakai, MD, PhD, is September’s Distinguished Faculty of the Month.

Born and raised in Japan, Sakai received his medical degree from Yamagata University School of Medicine and completed a residency in radiology at Jichi Medical School Hospital. He received his PhD from Jichi Medical School and completed a research fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. He joined Boston Medical Center (BMC) as a neuroradiology fellow in 2001 and remained as faculty at BMC/BUSM once the fellowship was completed.

Now a professor of radiology, otolaryngology and radiation oncology, and Division Chief for Neuroradiology, Sakai has educated numerous BU medical students and trainees in radiology, otolaryngology, and oral/maxillofacial surgery in neuroradiology and head and neck radiology. He has supported many medical students for the Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) and medical students and trainees for international away rotations. His CV is notable for 75 mentees, nearly all of whom have gone on to publish or have distinguished academic careers. He also organizes the department’s Grand Rounds lecture series and several clinical didactic conferences, and serves on the Committee of Faculty Affairs since 2013 and the Admissions Committee since 2014.
