Department of Surgery
For more than 150 years, the Department of Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (BUCASM) has excelled in providing patient care, conducting world-class research, and offering state-of-the art education.
Patients receive care through the Boston Medical Center Health System, which includes Boston Medical Center (BMC) and two community hospitals, BMC – Brighton and BMC – South. Based in Boston’s historic South End, Boston Medical Center is the flagship of the health system and the largest safety-net hospital in New England, as well as the primary teaching affiliate of BUCASM.
The Department of Surgery consists of 14 clinical divisions and sections and includes more than 50 faculty members as well as affiliated faculty members from VA Boston Healthcare System, Cape Cod Hospital, Roger Williams Medical Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Surgery Residency Program
The Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine/BMC Surgery Residency Program is a five-year program with six categorical residents per year, five chosen through ERAS, and since 2021, one position each year reserved for an active-duty military resident chosen through the military match. It provides residents with the range and depth of academic experience and clinical exposure required to develop superior surgical skills. Trainees also have diverse opportunities to engage in significant and impactful research, ranging from quality improvement and patient safety to surgical education and healthcare disparities.
