Howard Bauchner, MD, Elected to National Academy of Medicine

BauchnerHoward Bauchner, MD, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and on leave as professor of pediatrics and public health at Boston University, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Dr. Bauchner was one of one of 70 regular members and 10 international members who were elected during the inaugural annual meeting of the Academy held Oct. 19 in Washington, DC.

“Our newly elected members represent the brightest, most influential, and passionate people in health, science, and medicine in our nation and internationally,” said NAM President Victor J. Dzau. “They are at the top of their fields and are committed to service. The expertise they bring to the organization will help us respond to today’s most pressing health-related challenges and inform the future of health, science and medicine.”

Established originally as the Institute of Medicine in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine addresses critical issues in health, science, medicine, and related policy and inspires positive actions across sectors. NAM works alongside the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering and medicine. With their election, members make a commitment to volunteer their service in the Academies’ activities.
