Robert Jackler, MD (’79) Receives 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Award

COM JacklerRobert K. Jackler, MD, (BUSM ’79) was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award Sept. 26 during Boston University’s Alumni Weekend.

Conferred by the BU Alumni Association, the prestigious award is given to individuals who have “distinguished themselves by bringing credit to their communities, their profession and the University.”

Dr. Jackler is the Sewall Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, as well as Professor of Neurosurgery and Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has been at Stanford for 12 years.

An otologist-neurotologist who specializes in complex ear diseases, Dr. Jackler has a special interest in tumors of the lateral and posterior cranial base. For more than 25 years, Dr. Jackler has directed a fellowship program in neurotology and skull base surgery, which has trained a number of academic leaders in the field. In addition, he leads the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss, a large-scale research effort at Stanford University to find biological cures for hearing loss.

In 2007 Dr. Jackler and his wife Laurie founded the interdisciplinary research group SRITA (Stanford Research into The Impact of Tobacco Advertising) which studies the effects of tobacco advertising, marketing and promotion. As a result of SRITA’s research, more than 20,000 original tobacco advertisements reside in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, and SRITA maintains an annotated online digital collection of over 16,000 tobacco advertisements for use by scholars.

The author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, Dr. Jackler has written more than 35 textbook chapters, numerous editorials, and has published three books on neurotology, skull base surgery and tumors of the ear and temporal bone.

Dr. Jackler is an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and London. In 1999 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
