We aspire to create an environment that is supportive and respectful of all members of the department regardless of academic qualifications and rank, ethnic, racial and national origins, gender, sexuality, abilities, and religious beliefs. Moreover, we value a culture of cohesion and collaboration. To break down barriers and maintain a strong sense of community we:

- Include trainee representatives in our faculty meetings.
- Hold an annual scientific departmental retreat, organized by faculty, trainees, and administrative staff.
- Hold a holiday party and Yankee Swap.
- Have a monthly departmental breakfast or happy hour hosted in turn by each of the laboratory research groups.

We also expect all members of the department to adhere to our policy on the Appropriate Treatment of Faculty, Staff, Students, and Trainees.
