Postdoctoral Scholars
Being a postdoctoral scholar is an exciting and vital phase of a research scientist’s career. It is a time for honing research planning, writing, and presentation skills, expanding the scholar’s network, and laying the groundwork for the next stage in their career. To help maximize the postdoctoral scholar experience, the university and the department offer the following resources:
- Professional development and postdoctoral affairs – a university-wide resource that offers online and in person professional development programs and events, as well as community building social events.
- Research in progress seminars – postdoctoral scholars and research scientists are strongly encouraged to present their research in the departmental trainee seminar series that is held on Mondays.
- Travel awards – postdoctoral scholars in the VIM department can apply for a competitive travel award to contribute towards the costs of attending a conference. Look out for the notice in the spring semester.
- Postdoc and research scientist “coffee & donuts” – these are monthly gatherings to foster the postdoctoral and research scientist community in the department, and provide an opportunity to socialize, and provide each other support.
- Faculty support – postdoctoral scholars and research scientists are strongly encouraged to reach out to any member of the VIM faculty for advice and guidance on their research or future research plans. We want you to succeed and will do what we can to help!
