The Boston VA Medical Center (BVAMC) includes a 350-bed hospital, of which 100 beds are on the Surgical Service. Located in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, more the 6,000 operations were performed at the Medical Center last year. The rotation at the Medical Center is a valuable and integral part of the Boston University Surgical Residency Program.Boston University surgical residents rotate to the BVAMC at all five levels of training, where they have the opportunity to actively participate in and manage a busy clinical service that handles a variety of acute and elective general surgical and vascular problems. Clinical and research interests of the surgical attending staff include gastrointestinal surgery and the surgical management of peripheral vascular disease and portal hypertension. During their rotations at BVAMC, residents have extensive exposure to these constantly changing clinical areas and have the opportunity to participate in many of the research projects. A surgical technique laboratory and basic or clinical research are available.The Boston VA Medical Center has a busy Medical Service and an active investigation-oriented Radiology Service with a research interest in ultrasonography, CT and MRI scanning. The Service also features a well-organized resident education program; its close proximity to Boston Medical Center enables residents to attend conferences at BMC that may be on interest. There is a shuttle service which travels between the BMC and the BVAMC to facilitate attendance.
