John Renner, MD Participates in U.S. Health and Human Services Opioid Healthcare Crisis Roundtable Discussion

On June 16, 2017, American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) President John A. Renner, Jr., and AAAP CEO Kathryn Cates-Wessel met with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price in a roundtable discussion on strategy and policy options to address the opioid healthcare crisis.

DATA 2000 organizations are the organizations authorized to provide waiver training to clinicians who wish to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD).  AAAP was one of four DATA 2000 to participate in the roundtable, which was called to hear from these organizations working on the front lines of this issue. Other organizations included: American Osteopathic Association of Addiction Medicine, American Psychiatric Association , and American Society of Addiction Medicine.

“This was a historical moment to have all four DATA 2000 organizations meeting with the secretary of Health and Human Services,” said Ms. Cates-Wessel. “Working together, these organizations can help HHS address this epidemic and provide clinical expertise that is vital in this effort.”  Among those also participating in the panel was Altha Steward, MD, the President-elect of the American Psychiatric Association.

Additionally, AAAP will present the 2017 Founders’ Award to Dr. Renner, recognizing him as a long-time leader in the substance use disorder field.
