James Hudspeth, M.D. and Kristen Lee, M.D., honored and inducted into newly formed Clinical Excellence Society
Members of the BU Medical Group, formerly known as the Faculty Practice Foundation, honored the clinical contributions of BU faculty who exemplify the mission and values of the Group through leadership, patient care and innovative perspectives. James Hudspeth, MD, Section of General Internal Medicine and Kristen Lee, MD, Section of General Internal Medicine were among the 15 fifteen faculty inducted into the newly formed Clinical Excellence Society.
In addition, Dr. Hudspeth was presented the Excellence in Care Award, which is presented to an early or mid-career clinician that demonstrates clinical excellence and serves as an exceptional role model for the values in his clinical work.

Detecting Mental Health Conditions in Women Veterans Helps To Identify Their Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
A research team from BUSM and the VA Boston Healthcare System, which included corresponding author Megan Gerber, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine, conducted a study that found Women Veterans that exhibit a high degree of mental health issues are associated with an increased risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). The study also found that with each additional mental health condition (depression, anxiety and psychotic disorders), the odds of CAD increased by at least 40%. Sarah Bagley, MD, named one of Greater Boston’s Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Ten Outstanding Young Leaders
Sarah Bagley, MD, Assistant Professor in the Section of General Internal Medicine, was named one of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Ten Outstanding Young Leaders (TOYL). As founder and director of BMC’s CATALYST clinic, Dr. Bagley and her team focus on treating young adults and teens struggling with substance use disorder.
The TOYL awards celebrate the contributions of current and emerging young leaders like Bagley who have demonstrated professional, personal and civic commitment to improving the quality of life within the Greater Boston region. She will be honored on November 8 at Laugh Boston.

Vijaya Kolachalama Receives AHA Grant to Improve Cardiovascular Treatments
Vijaya Kolachalama, PhD, Assistant Professor of Cardiology, has received a Scientist Development grant from the American Heart Association (AHA). The award will fund his three-year study,“Mechanisms of Drug-Coated Balloon Therapy.” The project focuses on developing models for smarter artery care, including improving drug coated angioplasty balloons that could benefit patients with clogged arteries.
