First-Generation Low-Income in Medicine (FGLI-Med)

Mission: The First-Generation Low-Income in Medicine (FGLI-Med) student group brings together a welcoming community for first-generation and/or low-income medical students at BUCASM through providing mentorship opportunities and creating an academic support system to help students navigate medical school and the medical profession. In collaboration with the Newbury Center, our events include a welcome event, monthly community events/lunches, speaker series, and an end-of-the-year graduation pinning ceremony. We also invite our non-FGLI classmates to learn about the different paths and challenges their peers undertake in order to become a physician.

Vision: Our vision is to create a community for first-generation and/or low-income medical students at BUCASM to foster discussion of the barriers and knowledge gaps that first-generation and/or low-income medical students face and to develop ways to help overcome them.

FGLI definition: We define first-generation as students who are the first in their families to pursue undergraduate and/or professional degrees. Low-income is a category that we leave up to individuals to self-determine. Any students who connect with or want to learn about and support any of these identities are welcome to join the group. Students do not need to identify as FGLI to support the group and attend events.
