MRI and Ultrasound Scanning Cores

Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine has two magnetic resonance imaging systems and one ultrasound imaging system dedicated for research use:

  • 3T Philips Ingenia Elition MRI
  • 9.4T Bruker BioSpec MRI
  • Verasonics Vantage 256™ Ultrasound System

These scanners are available to meet the needs of researchers throughout the greater Boston area.  Stephan W. Anderson, MD, and Lee E. Goldstein MD, PhD, co-directors of the center, provide administrative oversight, and are responsible for all three of these devices.

Scanning time on the 9.4T, 3T and ultrasound devices can be scheduled using the iLab Scheduler system. Please check the specific device website for pricing.

3T Philips Ingenia Elition Scanner

Book 3T Philips MRI Scanner now!

The 3T Philips Ingenia Elition scanner was installed in 2020 and is located in the basement of the Evans Biomedical Research Center, X-Building, 650 Albany St., Boston. The device is equipped with new high-end performance gradient and RF design combined with innovative compressed sensing and multiband technologies.

This is the ideal scanner for use with humans or large animals. Andrew Ellison, MA, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the 3T Philips Ingenia Elition scanner.

9.4T/20cm Bruker BioSpec MRI

Book it now!

The Center of Biomedical Imaging houses a 9.4T Bruker BioSpec MRI. It has a bore size of 20 cm and is equipped with a state-of-art CryoProbes. The 9.4T system provides imaging capacities ranging from small animals (e.g., rats and mice) to ex vivo tissue samples.

Both MRI scanners are located in the basement of the Evans Biomedical Research Center, X-Building, 650 Albany St., Boston. The Center provides MRI scan time, as well as expertise in all modalities of magnetic resonance imaging for the Boston University community and for external researchers.

Ning Hua, PhD, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the 9.4T Bruker scanner. All new projects must first be discussed with Dr. Hua to determine feasibility and initiate planning of experiments. For extended projects, we will train new investigators and provide expert consultation.

The Verasonics Research Ultrasound Systems

Book it now!

The Verasonics Vantage 256™ system provides a highly flexible platform for research ultrasound. The device comes with different channel options, a broad frequency range, and capability of multi-channel arbitrary waveform generation. The Verasonics systems are easily programmable, which utilize MATLAB® interface and has over 500 example scripts. The Verasonics system is an ideal tool for pre-clinical ultrasound research. Dr. Hua is responsible for the day-to-day operations of this Vantage 256™ ultrasound system.
