My career goal is to apply my knowledge in veterinary medicine to most effectively use animal models to develop therapies that can significant translational potential and potential to impact patient outcomes. I have a career-long interest in hematology research, which emerged from my experience treating canine patients with hematological malignancies. My major research focus is hematopoietic stem cell biology and the de-regulation of those processes in malignancy. My current project explores the potential to target stem cells in myeloproliferative neoplasms driven by the JAK2V617F mutation through integrins. Given the experience accumulated on therapeutic targeting of integrins, I am excited by the significant translational potential of this project.
I graduated School of Veterinary Medicine and completed Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. My training in research consists of a graduate degree at the University of Tokyo, Japan, under the guidance of Dr. Hajime Tsujimoto, and postdoctoral training at the laboratories of Dr. Dong-Er Zhang at the Scripps Research Institute and at the University of California, San Diego under a F32 award, and Dr. Katya Ravid at Boston University. I was promoted Instructor of Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine in 2016 and Assistant Professor in 2021. I am a PI of the career development SERCA K01 award, from the Office of Research Infrastructure (ORIP)/NIH, a training mechanism specifically designed for veterinarians pursuing basic research.
