Peter J. Morin, MD, PhD

Biography

Peter J Morin, MD, Ph.D. is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine.

Dr. Peter J. Morin received in B.A. in Physics from Colby College in Waterville, ME in 1984 and his PhD (Biochemistry) and MD from Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine in 1992. He served as a medical intern at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital of Boston for one year and then completed neurology residency at the Harvard-Longwood Neurology Program in 1996. Dr. Morin completed simultaneous fellowships in cell biology and behavioral neurology at the Center for Neurological Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he served as associate neurologist. From 1999-2002, Dr. Morin served as a partner in a clinical private practice in Bangor, ME, where he established a Memory Disorders Clinic in a rural community medical center. He returned to Boston University in 2002 and conducts research into the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Dr. Morin has received numerous career awards and research grants from NIH, Department of Veterans Affairs, and private foundations to study neurodevelopmental mechanisms in the aging brain, including endogenous stem cells and induced pleuripotent stem cells. An expert on the ethics of dementia and end-of-life care, Dr. Morin has chaired the Bedford VA Hospital Medical Ethics Committee for 8 years and also serves on the VA Regional Ethics Committee. Dr. Morin serves as Physician Leader for Schwartz Center Rounds at the Bedford VA Hospital. He has initiated and established advanced programs in telehealth for geriatric patients, including home-video telehealth and integrated multidisciplinary primary care home-video telehealth. Dr. Morin is currently establishing the VA’s first Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at the Bedford VA Hospital. Dr. Morin is currently the lead or co-investigator on five funded research grants and he is the recipient of numerous VA awards for his work in ethics and a recognized leader in healthcare innovation and education.

Dr. Morin has made major contributions to innovation in healthcare in the Department of veterans Affairs. His scientific research is focused on the role of developmental signaling mechanisms and their role in neurodegeneration.
