Faculty Hiring Checklist

The Committee on Faculty Affairs (CFA) is a BUSM Standing committee composed of 25 faculty each elected by their department. As mandated by the BUSM Bylaws, CFA meets monthly to address faculty concerns that relate to faculty interactions with administration, management of research and teaching facilities, and enhancement of the academic community on the Medical Campus.

In Fall 2020, CFA was approached by BUSM faculty to implement transparent and open hiring practices to increase faculty diversity, as well as equity in opportunities within BUSM or departmental leadership positions. CFA adapted best external faculty hiring practices from Boston University faculty search guidelines. At the same time, the Office of Equity, Vitality, and Inclusion at Boston University Medical Group (BUMG), under the leadership of Aviva Lee-Parritz and Megan Bair-Merritt, developed Review-Based Guidelines for departmental leadership positions for BUSM clinical departments.

CFA and BUMG joined efforts to generate the Faculty Hiring Checklist which has been endorsed by the BUSM Executive Committee. It is currently being implemented for both internal and external hires of new faculty, as well as selecting faculty for internal leadership positions.
