Michael Harrell, MD, (MED’14)

Dr. Harrell is a graduate of Morehouse College and an alumnus of the Early Medical School Selection Program (EMSSP). After completing medical school at BUSM, he served as a General Medical Officer in the US Navy. Following the completion of his active duty service in 2019, he returned to Boston for his residency in ophthalmology at Boston Medical Center.
After residency, he plans to pursue fellowship training in Medical Retina, and his eventual practice will include medical retina and comprehensive ophthalmology – including cataract surgery.
Q: Why pursue medicine?
A: “The idea of using my love of science and helping to solve people’s problems led me to medicine. I love being able to provide the representation that so many of the Black and Brown people in our communities never see. Our profession is noble, and we are privileged to be able to practice it.”
Q: If you could describe the EMSSP program in three words, what would you say?
A: Family lasts forever!
His article “Strategies Potentially Associated With Increasing Racial and Ethnic Groups Underrepresented in Medicine” was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
