Melista Named “Woman of the Year in Science” by Greek Magazine

Efthymia (Efi) Melista, BSc department of Genetics, Boston University School of Medicine has been named “Woman of the Year in Science” by the Greek publishing company Limperis, which publishes Life & Style magazine. She was one of eight nominees in the science category and received the most votes by the readers of the magazine.

This award ceremony, now in the eighth year, was held on May 10 in Athens. Eighteen women received awards for their significant contributions in their respective fields.

Ms. Melista is part of a scientific team that researches the probability that a person may live to be a centenarian by studying genetic markers. Specifically the team is studying the underlying genetic factors that contribute to exceptional longevity. In addition the team is interested in the genetic factors that protect centenarians from diseases that are related to old age, such as cardiovascular disease, dementia and arthritis. These factors may increase lifespan but may also improve quality of life.

Ms. Melista is a native of Athens. She studied genetics at Cardiff University, Wales and graduated in 2002. She has worked as part of Dr. Clinton Baldwin’s scientific team at BUSM since 2006.
