Surgical Society

The Surgical Society is an organization that fosters interest in general surgery and surgical subspecialties among medical students at Boston University. The Surgical Society is composed of two subgroups, the Surgical Interest Group (SIG) and the Surgical Enrichment Experience (SEE); medical student involvement is encouraged in either one or both of the groups!

The Surgical Interest Group (SIG) provides an opportunity for medical students to explore a career in surgery. Our goal is to increase student exposure to the world of surgery and help prepare students for surgical clerkships, regardless of future specialty choice. The SIG hosts seminars, guest speakers, panels, and other events with attendance welcome to all. Invitations to the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds and M&M will be sent out weekly as well. We also hope to function as a liaison between students and surgical faculty at BMC, so please reach out with any questions!

The Surgical Enrichment Experience (SEE) is a curriculum advised by Dr. Kang, Dr. Scantling, and Dr. Theodore with the goal of exposing students to surgery during the preclinical years. The SEE runs during the spring for M1 students and the fall for M2 students. There are attendance and reflection requirements to earn credit for completion and to be matched for surgical shadowing opportunities. Events include hands-on suturing and scrubbing workshops, talks on common surgical procedures and cases, and more!
