The Alumni Association: You Belong.

Whether you’re an alum, a student, faculty member, or friend of the school, the Boston University School of Medicine Alumni Association is here for you. The association fosters strong relationships among the entire BUSM community and promotes the goals of the Dean of the School of Medicine. The association also serves as a ready source of volunteers and financial supporters.

Bringing People Together since 1874.

Almost 150 years ago, the five members of BUSM’s first class created the BUSM Alumni Association with these words:

“The undersigned, members of the first class of the Boston University College of Medicine, desirous of keeping up our mutual relations for the benefit of the Medical Department of the above named University, and for the pleasure and good we may derive therefrom, do organize ourselves into an association.”

Through the years.

Early on, association meetings served as forums to promote high standards of medical practice, important in a time of controversy over the efficacy of homeopathy.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the association created an endowment to support new academic departments and to build classrooms and laboratories.

The 1950s brought a campaign to raise scholarship aid from alumni which continues to this day.

The Instructional Building was erected in the 1960s with significant support from alumni; in fact, the building’s Alumni Medical Library was named in their honor.

More recently, continued generosity from the Alumni Association helped establish the William F. McNary, Jr. Student Learning Resource Center.

Over the decades, alumni have served BUSM as officers and directors, faculty, administrators, benefactors, class agents, fundraisers, and reunion organizers. Each year brings a new class ready to join the ranks and help make BUSM even better than when they graduated.

The Challenge of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult on everyone and presents a particular challenge to an organization dedicated to bringing people together. Obviously, we have suspended the hosting of in-person events, but the Alumni Association continues to keep alumni and students as connected and engaged as possible virtually and via regular updates.

Going forward, the association will continue to fulfill our mission to bring students and alumni together through support and networking opportunities, including e-mentoring and shadowing, and to keep alumni in touch with events such as alumni weekends. In addition, we are constantly developing new affinity-based programs based on alumni input, such as Early Medical School Selection Program Homecoming.
