BUSM’s Jane Méndez Honored with Boston University Faculty ATM Award

Jane E. Méndez, MD, associate professor of surgery and director of the surgery clerkship at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) received the Appropriate Treatment in Medicine (ATM) Award given annually to a BUSM faculty member.

The award recognizes Méndez’s outstanding teaching and leadership of BU medical students and her personal commitment toward creating a positive learning environment. Serving as a role model for personal integrity and accountability, Méndez was as selected by students and faculty members at BUSM.

“In the Department, we all know Jane as a role model for personal integrity and accountability – it is great to see that these characteristics and tremendous effort are acknowledged by the larger school community,” said Gerard Doherty, MD, Chair and Utley Professor of Surgery at BUSM.

Active in multiple surgical and breast surgery related organizations, Méndez served as vice chair of the Education Committee of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), is a member of the Disparities Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology and a member of the Nominating/Programs Committee at Susan G. Komen, Mass. affiliate. In addition, Méndez is a national and international breast cancer speaker and the author of multiple publications in prestigious medical journals.

Méndez, who is also a surgical oncologist at Boston Medical Center, has dedicated her career to breast cancer prevention and treatment in underserved and minority patient populations. She received her medical degree and completed her general surgery residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
