About the Sarcoidosis Center

The Sarcoidosis Center at Boston Medical Center was founded in 1995 by Jeffrey Berman, M.D. who continues to service as the Director. Dr. Berman is Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine.

The Sarcoidosis Center provides second opinions or consultation for approximately 150 new sarcoidosis patients annually; many more sarcoidosis patients receive ongoing diagnosis and care through the Center. For information about scheduling appointments, please click here.

A research program was established in 1995 and has been continuously active since that time. Dr. Berman’s research in Pulmonary Immunology has been continuously funded since 1984 by the National Institutes of Health and private foundations. Research ongoing through the Sarcoidosis Center includes basic research and clinical research projects. Current areas of investigation include:

  • use of nasal brushings and washings as a noninvasive diagnostic and prognostic tool in sarcoidosis
  • analysis of sarcoidosis among a cohort of Black Women, and
  • the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension in sarcoidosis.

Questions about study enrollment should be directed to Dr. Berman.

A premier mission of the Center is to train the next generation of scientists and physicians in sarcoidosis. Since its opening, 15 physicians (Residents and Fellows) have received training through the Center and several have gone on to treat sarcoidosis patients around the United States and Europe.

Dr. Berman believes strongly in the importance of educating the next generation of physicians in specialty care. He has been Director of Fellowship Training Programs at the Pulmonary Center since 1988, and has overseen the training of nearly 100 young men and women in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The inclusion of Residents and Fellows in the care of patients in the Sarcoidosis Center provides a benefit for the patients attending the Sarcoidosis Center. Our Residents are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and creative, and keep the spark of learning alive.

Please direct inquiries about Fellowship Training to Dr. Berman.
