Departmental News
The department welcomes Dr. Elke Muhlberger, a filovirus expert, who joined the department as an Associate Professor on August 1, 2008. Dr. Muhlberger came to us from the University of Marburg, Marburg Germany.
We would also like to welcome Dr. Katharine Bossart, a Research Associate Professor who is an expert on henipavirus. Dr. Bossart joined the department on July 1, 2008. Se comes to us form CSIRO Livestock Industries in Geelong, Australia.
Congratulations to Tim Hanley, the 2008 recipient of the Corwin Award, which is given by the Departmetn of Microbiology to a Microbiology graduate student who exemplifies the meaning of outstanding department citizen.
The department is happy to announce our 2008 Russek Student Achievement Day award winners: Ana Avalos, 1st prize; Jen Dan, 2nd prize; and Karen Lee, honorable mention.
Dr. Sarah Noton and Dr. Ewan Dunn have each been awarded a postdoctoral fellow travel grant and Erin Trail has been awarded a graduate student travel grant from the American Society for Virology to attend their 27th annual meeting in July 2008.
Linda Parlee wins Perkins Award
Congratulations to Linda Parlee who is a recipient of the John S. Perkins Distinguished Service Award for 2008. These awards are presented annually to three Boston University staff members in recognition of outstanding service to the University. Linda is a deserving recipient!
Congratulations to Greg Viglianti who was just awarded a 5 year grant from the NIAID to study molecular factors which influence the mucosal transmission of HIV-1!
New Virology Faculty:
Tom Geisbert, an expert in Ebola and related viruses, has accepted a position in the department and the new NEIDL Institute. Dr. Geisbert began November 1, 2007.
Graduate Student Awards:
Karen Lee won the MedImmune “Inflammation and Autoimmunity” abstract competition in Washington, DC. Tim Hanley won the “Young Investigators Award” for the 2008 “Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections”. Both are MD/PhD students.
