Match Day 2019: New Chapter, Next Step

Red and white balloons. A champagne toast. The strike of noon. A white envelope. A nervous (or excited) pit in the stomachs of fourth-year students. This is just another Match Day at Boston University School of Medicine.

For some it feels like they are moving in slow motion and for others it’s as if everything is moving at warp speed. At exactly noon on the third Friday in March, the hard work of the past four years culminated as the Class of 2019 learned which residency program they will be attending and where they will spend the next three to seven years of their lives.

“Your class has matched all over the U.S. and Canada, in 30 states from Maine to California. We are delighted that we will be keeping 20 of you who matched at BMC, and five more who will join us in our combined BMC-Children’s Pediatric residency,” said BUSM Dean Karen Antman, MD.

The class matched in a range of programs, but this year’s top specialties include Internal Medicine (29), Emergency Medicine (23), Pediatrics (20), Surgery (20), Anesthesia (10) and Family Medicine (10). Many will be staying in Massachusetts (55), but New York (22) and California (21) were popular destinations, as well.

All of their hard work has paid off and the Class of 2019 is ready for the next chapter. Enjoy this day. You’ve all earned it. Congratulations!
