Match Day March Madness

“Match Day is the culmination of a lot of work, a lot of hours, a lot of anxiety. It’s pretty much all of medical school rolled into a moment where you find out where you’re going to go for the next part of your career,” explained Associate Dean for Student Affairs Angela Jackson.

On March 18 BUSM fourth-year medical students joined their peers across the country, counting down the clock until noon when they opened their envelopes to see where they will be heading next. Match Day is an annual rite of passage for graduating medical students, the day when they learn at which US residency programs they will train for the next three to seven years. “These are students who come here green and nervous, and four years later leave as competent physicians,” Jackson added.

While BUSM students matched in residencies across the country, more than half are going to three states: 48 are staying in Massachusetts, 33 are going to California and 28 are relocating to New York. See the accompanying graphic for more Match details.

MatchDay

The Class of 2016 matched in a range of programs:

  • 41 percent: ‘primary care’ specialties
  • 5 percent: emergency medicine
  • 6 percent: neurology
  • 5 percent: ob/gyn
  • 5 percent: surgery

Faculty and students gathered in the Hiebert Lounge to celebrate. Students pinned their new locations on a map and shared their match selections at a selfie photo booth kiosk. See more on the BU Medicine Facebook page.
