Biography

Dr. Stephen R. Addington is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and an Attending General Surgeon at Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. He earned his Medical Doctorate (MD) from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, through the Urban Medicine Track, and a Master of Health Service Administration and Policy (MHSA) from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Dr. Addington completed his General Surgery residency at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Addington’s clinical expertise encompasses general surgery, with a focus on improving surgical outcomes and access to care in underserved communities. His research interests include global surgery and health equity, with notable contributions to peer-reviewed journals such as World Journal of Surgery and Orthopedic Muscular System. His work on surgical care delivery in rural Haiti, conducted during his time as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and Research Trainee at Harvard’s Center for Surgery and Public Health, has been presented at the Academic Surgical Congress and published in The Lancet.

A committed educator, Dr. Addington conducts surgical teaching rounds for medical students and residents and serves on the Surgical Resident Selection Committee at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and has been recognized with honors including the 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award from Tufts University School of Medicine, the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. His leadership in initiatives like the Young Doctor’s Club in Chicago underscores his dedication to mentoring future healthcare professionals.
